The Web We Are

I used to think reality was made of things. Chairs, stars, people, atoms solid little objects, sitting in space, waiting to be looked at.

I don't think that anymore.

I think reality is made of relationship.

An electron isn't a tiny marble floating alone in the dark. What it is, what it does, only makes sense in how it touches everything around it;  other particles, other fields, the act of being noticed at all. Take away the relationships and there's nothing left to even call an electron.

I think we're not so different.

You're not just a body standing in a room. You're the sum of every hand that's held yours, every conversation that changed you, every person who saw you and made you a little more you. Take the relationships away, and there's less of a person left than you'd think.

So maybe the universe isn't a stage with objects placed on it. Maybe it's more like a web that’s impossibly large, endlessly reaching The things we call "real" are just the parts of that web holding steady long enough to have a name.

Here's the part I love most: the future isn't sitting out there already finished, waiting for us to arrive. It hasn't been decided. Right now, in this exact second, there are a thousand ways tonight could go, a thousand people you could still become, and none of them are locked in yet. Some paths are more likely than others. But nothing is written.

Then something happens. A choice, a glance, a decision and one of those thousand possibilities becomes real. It stops being a maybe and becomes a memory. That's what I think the present actually is: not a wave sweeping forward through time, but possibility turning into history, happening everywhere, all the time, in small quiet moments.

A star casts light and it can never take that light back. Two people share something and it can never be un-shared. Once it happens, the rest of the universe has to carry it forward.

I find something oddly tender in that. It means every ordinary moment, the text you finally sent, the risk you finally took, the way you looked at someone and let them see it, isn't small. It's the universe converting maybe into forever.

We're not just living inside history.

We're the place where it's being made.
